Week 14- Internet Safety Assignment

For this assignment I interviewed a girl that I know from back home. She is a freshman in college and would have been considered more on the popular side of her class. I thought it would be interesting to see if she knew anything about internet safety or problems that so many children are having. The first question I asked was if she knew what cyber-bullying was, she had never heard of it before. I was amazed by this and proceeded to explain to her what it was and why it is such a big problem. She was surprisingly uninformed about the different aspects of the internet and so I tried to talk her through some main safety procedures while being on the internet. It was interesting to have this interview and learn more about the slightly younger generation and see how informed (or uniformed) they are. I think this is valuable information because it seems like the majority of adults I know, are more aware of internet safety problems and thus they are more cautious. This is important because we as teachers and parents need to try and teach the younger generations more about this topic to avoid any heart breaking tragedies.

Week 13- Reading and Writing Business

1. What article did you choose to read for your fourth article?
I decided to read the article called "it's only violence" by Brad Bushman. While reading this article there were several things that I was already aware of, but there new bits of information. The article goes through how people today justify sex scenes in movies and notice these more frequently than the violence scenes.

2. What were the most important things you learned from the readings?
I think that the section that goes through different myths of media violence was very beneficial for parents and teachers. It talks about how the violence does increase aggressive behavior and this myth needs to be dispelled. Another thing that they talked about was how the media violence does not mirror the violence of the world. Several people believe that this is how violence in movies and on TV work, but this is incorrect.

3. How will what you have read influence your actions as a parent and/or teacher of children and youth?
I think that there are many things I will be doing in my future home for my children to help them be more protected from violence and other spiritual poison. Knowing that these thing are very available to all ages with access to the internet is scary. As A teacher I think that it would be best to make sure that all the computers have good internet blockers and make sure that there is a teacher present when students are working on the computers.

4. How can you use what you have learned from the reading to have a positive influence on family and friends?
I think that the best way to have a positive influence on family and friends is to provide them with the knowledge of internet safety and problems. Knowledge is power. I think that some people are not aware of the current state of the internet so therefore they are not able to protect themselves and their families.

PLE WEEK 14- Good Ideas

From listening to different presentations in class, there were many different ideas about how to integrate technology into the classroom. I noticed that even if the lesson does not require technology it almost always enhances the lesson. Even if it is not essential, it is something that will be more beneficial for the students. One idea that I got from this class was slightly more specific. One girl used a program called “i-clicker”. She was able to help the students study for their math test and it helped the teacher with assessing the students before their test. This is successful because each. Another idea that helped me learn more about integrating technology in the classroom was an activity that enhanced vocabulary. One girl used a Jeopardy game with different vocabulary and I thought it would be really fun to do something like that in the classroom. There were several other ideas that I learned more about during this class and will be better able to integrate technology in my future classroom.

New Information

After looking at the different slideshows I was able to learn more about how technology is beneficial into the classrooms. My group members had amazing power points and I really enjoyed looking at them. One thing that stuck out to me from Gen;s slideshow and then I noticed it form several other people's; but just the different ways that technology can benefit the children. I would have never thought about technology can help with physical well being and social/emotional development. These different aspects were amazing to learn more about and I feel like I gained a deep appreciation and desire to integrate technology into my future classroom.

Teaching Math and Literacy... Week 10

Mathematics Technology:

Content: This is for third grade: Standard 1; objective 2; a Identify the denominator of a fraction as the number of equal parts of the unit whole and the numerator of a fraction as the number of equal parts being considered.

Pedagogy: For this lesson, as the teacher I would explicitly teach the mathematics concepts in a large group activity so the students will be exposed. I will be having a few activities that can be done to help assess the students as we are working through the large activity to assess the different levels of students.

Technology: There is an online activity that helps students learn about their fractions, numerators and denominators. This activity is called "Fishy Fractions" I found it on the website Internet4Classrooms. Depending on the level of the students there are more challenging activities that can be done with fractions; so that each student can work on their own level. With this website you have to make a screenname (which might not be ideal). But it keeps track of the high scores- so that could be fun if a member of your classroom was a high scorer. After the students finish with using the technologies there are several different ways in which we can use objects in the classroom to make sure the students understand the concepts about fractions that were taught.

Literacy Technology

Content: Language Arts: Standard 3; objective 3; b. Segment words into onset and rime (e.g., sat, /s/.../a/.../t/).

Pedagogy: I will explicitly teach this essential reading knowledge by having a few small group activities where the students will be able to experiment with the different words; by saying them out loud- this will allow them to better understand the concepts that are being taught in the lesson.

Technology: For this activity there is a great website that is specifically for learning hot to blend words together. The main character is a blender and the students will help him pick the different onsets and rimes that go together. The blender will then tell the student if they are correct or not. This game seems like a very fun way for students to experiment with work blending along with different technologies.

ECE Technology Inventory

Being an early childhood education major, I had never really thought about the different technologies that are available within the classroom. I always figured that the kids would be on the younger side of things; so that would make our activities a little different than the elementary education majors. I always knew that I would use technology in the classroom, it was just a matter of what is developmentally appropriate. After interview a first grade classroom I was amazed at all the different technologies that were present.

In this particular classroom, there was one MAC computer that was available to the students in their classroom. They also had all the program that come with the MAC computer such as: iphoto, garageband, imovie, TimeMachine, and Spaces. There are numerous possibilities that come with all of these different programs. Also within the classroom there is a TV, CD player which would be great for showing movie clips or focusing on a certain culture's music. This classroom also has access to a DVD/VCR player, Smartboard/Smart Clickers and they have Internet access. There were several other things that this school (Hillcrest Elementary) provided for its teachers and students.

As I was learning more and more about the different technologies within the classroom, I began to think about the different activities and lessons that could be fun for the students. This elementary school had access to a technology called an Elmo. This is a way for the teacher to project a book up onto the big screen. I think that this is a technology that I would use in my future classroom. Along with the fun activities that are programmed into the Smartboards. I think that this class and the activities that are assigned are allowing me to think more outside the box and get ready to have a technology savvy classroom for my future students.

TPACK virual touring

What is the content I will be using?
For this activity I will be using Standard 1: students will understand how geography influences community location and development, Objective 3:Students will understand how geography influences community location and development, A: Identify ways people use the physical environment (e.g. agriculture, recreation, energy, industry) and E: Make inferences about the positive and negative impacts of human-caused change to the physical environment. I want the students to be exposed to a different culture and see how certain cultures preserve their history and allow it to become part of who they are. The students will be visiting a path of four major cities in Spain. Each city has different culture influences like, the Muslim architecture, Gothic style, and several other styles.

What is the pedagogy I will be using and why is it a good fit?
I would start this lesson off by showing them different pictures of buildings and other culture related things that are found all over the world. I would then generate a discussion about differences and why that is important and makes the world a better place. After that we would focus in on Spain and introduce a little about its history. Then I would show the tour to the children so they would be able to make connections to what we discussed in class.

What is the technology I will be using and why is it a good fit?
I will be using the virtual tour for this activity. This will be great for the students because instead of just talking about it and maybe showing a couple of pictures, they will be able to get a greater picture of what it is really like. This will help them make more connections and learn more about the culture differences in Spain compared to the United States.

Week 5- Storyboard!

*What is the content use for the lesson?
The content I am using is for kindergarten age children. It is objective 3: Develop and use skills to communicate ideas, information, and feelings; A. Identify and express ideas, information, and feelings in a variety of ways.
*What is the pedagogy used and why does it fit with the content?
For this lesson the teacher will use a read aloud to the students, throughout the reading the teacher will make the reading interactive and encourage the children to think of the different emotions and feelings that are being discussed. There will be an activity for the students to complete after the reading that will integrate the use of motor skills and relation the text to self/text to world.
*What is the technology used and why is it a good fit with the pedagogy and technology?
For the technology that will go along with this lesson I think that the digital storytelling would be fun for the students. Each child will draw/create a picture of emotions (or I will take pictures of the children making different faces). Then we can put the pictures of the students together and provide narration and music. This will not only be so much fun for the students, but it will provide them with more exposure to the world of technology.

Questions

For the project our group is focusing on the state core standard that students will be able to understand the microorganisms range from simple to complex and to know how there are both helpful and harmful.  The objective we are using is for students to be able to understand and summarize information about microorganisms.  The pedagogy that can be incorporated into our lesson is dealing with how to teach science.  Because our lesson is focused on a step by step process where they experiment with the online activities of the virtual pond and then later they will be looking at real pond water under the microscopes, which goes along with the standards of the lesson where the students will gain a greater understanding of microorganisms as well as learn how to summarize information related to them.  As the students look at the different microorganisms they will be able to see the process in which they grow as well as distinguishing between the different forms.  This will help them with analyzing their science data and learn about different characteristics which is related back to the pedagogy.  The technology that our group used was the Virtual pond dip, along with a microscope.  This technology is very beneficial for the students because it has several different organisms within the pond and the students can click on each one and learn about it.  This allows the student to go through the process of analyzing information and learning about the different qualities of the science lesson.   This is a good way for the students to learn about the pond life while including the utah state core and the TPACK tools to better assist the lesson plan.

Exploring Technologies (week4)

After looking at the different math and technology programs were online my two favorites were Celestia and the Virtual Pond Dip.  The Celestia program was very informative and allows students to look at each planet as well as the entire solar system as a whole.  I think this would be a good tool to use in the classroom if we ever have a unit on the solar system.  The second science tool that I thought was so cool, was the Virtual Pond Dip.  I wish that I had this when I was in school, I thought it was so cool how you can see the different microorganisms that are in the pond.  You can click on different links and it will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the different living creatures in the pond.  I used this tool for my science/math challenge for the following week and I am excited to use this activity in my future classroom

TPACK AMOR...

Learning more about TPACK and the different tools that are involved with that, was very interesting.    I thought that it seemed a little confusing at first, but remember that there are three main concepts at the core that break off the make more sections.  The way that the website gave examples of each part of TPACK was so helpful and it I was better able to understand the bigger picture.  The overall concept of integration was something that I was familiar with, from a previous class.  But I had never thought about integrating technology to the classroom and how helpful and beneficial it is.  I think that this model will help me in the near future and it will make it a little easier to organize my lesson plans while maintaining an objective throughout the entire lesson.

Science at it's Best

*The students will also be looking at real pond water after they experience the virtual pond activities!
http://www.microscope-microscope.org/basic/buyers-guide.htm

*This is a caption from the virtual pond website that goes through each microorganism by group.  It also has a picture of what it would look like, along with a brief explanation of the characteristics they have.
* These three pictures are captions that were taken from the virtual pond website.  The students are able to see each microorganism that lives in the pond.  They can also click on each type and read more information about the individual microorganisms!

* The pretty pond caption is just an example of what a pond looks like in real life.  It would be good for kids to see this along with the online activities.  The students will even take a trip to a nearby pond if time and budgets allow for that type of activity.

 Teacher Savvy:

As a teacher in the increasingly tech savvy world we have created a way for students in the 6th grade classroom to explore different microorganisms through the use of digital microscopes and an interactive Internet website. We believe that through the use of these aids this lesson will be more meaningful for the students.

The objective that we are focusing on for our science lesson is to observe and summarize information about microorganisms. For this lesson we are going to introduce the students to the concept of microorganisms. We will discuss a few different types of microorganisms that surround us in our environment. After we have sparked the interest of this new concept we will then explore the website  HYPERLINK "http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/index.html" http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/index.html. This link will take you to Virtual Pond Dip and it is an interactive activity for students. It allows you to see the physical form of various microorganisms. In the pond, each component is a link and has specific information concerning each individual microorganism. The virtual pond will allow students to explore various microorganisms and their information.

After this activity of exploring microorganisms in the pond water, we will then introduce the students to the digital microscope. We plan on using small sample of pond water for the students to view through the microscope. Only a small drop is required under a digital microscope and it allows students to see these small organisms up close.

As students have opportunities to explore microorganisms online, they will be able to clearly see and identify the differences between the various organisms. Using the Virtual Pond website students are able to easily view and classify microorganisms. This easily enhances their ability to pick out the microorganisms and identify the various components involved with each. As students learn about each microorganism they are not only viewing the physical characteristics, but also the make-up and movement of each. This provides the perfect introduction into classifying microorganisms before students view real life microorganisms from a nearby pond. Students are able to truly learn the differences between each microorganism, making time spent looking through the microscope more useful. Students will be able to truly learn the differences without feeling burdened and overwhelmed with staring through a microscope for many hours. This technological feature also makes the distinctions between the microorganisms more clear, enhancing their ability to classify, identify and observe microorganisms. Using this technology not only saves time in the classroom, it also develops studentʼs use of the internet and observing abilities. Students learn skills in many areas as they learn about the microorganism from the Virtual Pond website.

A Whole New World

During this past week, I have learned more about the internet and how to use it than I thought was possible.  I was amazed at how the RSS worked and how easy it was to access.  Another thing that surprised me, was how many people were involved in the goodreads and delicious programs that are available online.  I think that once I am a teacher these different programs will be very beneficial for my teaching career.  I love that people can voice their opinions about different books and then I will be able to find books that have good reviews by fellow teachers.  I am enjoying learning about the different ways I will be able to enhance my classroom and be a more prepared teacher for my students!

Technology Experience

Growing up, there was always a computer that was available in my house where I was able to learn the basic functions of computers.  However, this was the extent of my learning.  I feel very confident with email and the basic internet functions.  After being in this class for one day; I realized that I know very little about technology in general and even less about technology within the classroom.  I feel like my experience with technology is at a very superficial level.  I am excited to expand my knowledge of technology and I am looking forward to using it in my future classrooms.
